Chapter 38: Dark Day!

‘Have you ever had just one day that you can call your darkest day? The day that you are glad to never see again? The one day that makes you question a lot around you? If you’ve ever had a day like that, can you remember the date this has occurred? After reflecting on his life, especially after meeting the Pines Twins, Bill’s darkest day suddenly has a silver lining, all thanks to one shining Shooting Star!”
~(Bill’s P.O.V.)~

Darkness….

Black Oblivion…..

Mind numbing nothingness for miles and miles…..

This is the existence that I was doomed to live after being banished!

I knew too much, the author didn’t want to stick to our deal, the journals are out of my reach!

This is my home, a place I am doomed to see for as long as my life span allows me to!

This is my home for eternity with not one speck of light to lead me through this tunnel of inky darkness. Thankfully I can see in the dark.

How can someone expect to live like this and not go insane? To not want to break free from this prison? To want to be among the living despite how it has to happen? How can anyone call this their existence? Their TRUE existence?

I can still remember the day that I was turned into this monster and was doomed to live in this darkness I am forced to call my home. That one journal, that one pesky journal that my curiosity begged me to look into while accompanying my best friend Will on the job, more like forced me, that’s what started it all. That’s how I am only able to live in the dreamscape, and that’s how I am able to only exist in this form. The day it happened, I call that, my Dark Day.

My life span is only the length of the deals I make with the humans who cross my path or I cross theirs. I’m not meant to live forever, be taken notice of, or even exist on the physical plane with everyone else, that’s never the life of a dream demon, or a demon period. Often time, my origins have been brought into question of where I come from or how I even came to be. No one would believe me if I told them. That story would sound more like something you’d read about in a story book or in movies, but never think would happen in real life. No, not this life, not my life.

When being banished here, I was given the option to exist in the real world with everyone else, in human form, but yet, I declined. Why live in the most horrid form ever when I can simply remain in this form and continue doing what I do best, making deals and monitoring how well those agreements are going over or don’t go over. So far thirty nine deals were made with nine of those deals being broken and what happened to those who broke the deals with me, yea, not a story I would willingly tell, not even as a bed time story. They were just that gruesome. While them breaking the deals doesn’t shorten my life span by any, it does make me wonder just how crafty I have it as a dream demon, and by crafty I mean skilled. Being locked in this dismal dungeon for eternity doesn’t exactly help how my mental state has been functioning and by that I mean, little by little I feel myself slipping into insanity as darkness surrounds me every second of everyday. Who am I kidding, I have gone insane, thus my reason for making twisted deals so to grant myself more time in this life. If you were me, you’d do the same thing.

While I were able to catch and make deals with humans, there is a set that I quite haven’t gotten to yet, three as a matter of fact, three of the ten chosen: Question Mark, Shooting Star, and Pine tree. Those three, the three that I were forced to battle in Stanford’s dreamscape because I made a deal with a kid that I, at this point, couldn’t be more glad to be rid of. While our deal never manifested per our agreement, that skunk got what was coming to him since he broke out deal. Jail wasn’t the only thing he had to face as when I make a deal with someone, I expect it to be through to the end!

But back to those three, those three of the ten, there is something special about those three starting with Question Mark. Clumsy, handy in his own way, and in some way thoughtless. I could easily persuade him to make a deal with me and he wouldn’t think twice about what we talked about, thus leaving the ball in my court to do what it took to not only see the deal through, but also twist his words in my own way. Question Mark isn’t the smartest of the bunch I noticed, but yet, he has secrets that I am itching to get to the bottom of….

Pine Tree, what can I say about him that’s not already obvious? The kid is sharp as a whip, curious, kind of paranoid, ok really paranoid, but most of all, smart. Trying to make a deal with him will be just like pulling teeth. While I am the master of persuasion, something about making a deal with this kid will be a lot harder than most of my past deals. It wouldn’t stop me from trying of course, but with this kid, you’d have to bring the heavy artillery because he’d try to find every “what if”, loophole, or some reason for going around the deal I try to make with him! Like I said, sharp as a whip!

And finally Shooting Star. Ah, Shooting Star, what’s not to love—I mean think about her? Always smiling, always on top of the latest fashion, and always doing her best to cheer someone up as she has never seen a dark day a day in her life. Even I have to admit that her smile can brighten up a room and her personality? What’s not to love---I mean like about it? When making a deal with her, it will be easier than her brother that’s for sure, but yet, a bit challenging. Some have thought that just by looking at her, she’s not the brightest bulb in the box when that’s the complete opposite. Shooting Star is brighter than how most view her as she is curious, smart, and think things through before even giving an answer of any kind. Sure she has her times of being too quick to give into some things such as wanting a boyfriend, but otherwise, she’s pretty smart. However there is something more about her that I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m not sure if it’s more about her personality or about her as a whole, but since encountering her in the dreamscape, something about her has stuck with me as if telling me to further explore what that is.

After informing them that I would be watching them before leaving those three in the dreamscape along with those eye-sore dream boys of Shooting Star’s, I kept my promise and did just that. From my home here, I watched them come and go, mature and grow, but most importantly, I’ve seen them grow from mere kids to young adults. Pine tree, despite being 16 years old now, still reminds me of the short twelve year old that I faced back in Stanford’s Dreamscape. The curious one that is always holding tightly onto that journal of his with his face constantly buried in it. Despite how much older he has gotten, he’ll still be that twelve year old pine tree hat kid to me.

Now Shooting Star, what can I say about her that isn’t already obvious? She has grown from that twelve year old energetic kid to a very, dare I say, alluring 16 year old teen. Everything about her has changed from her personality, to her clothes that she has been able to fill out properly, to well everything. Sure she still has that boy crazy notion still embedded in her personality, but everything else about her has changed, matured even! I have watched as her brother spent countless hours literally beating the boys off with a stick just to protect her. I’d be lying if I said I wish I were able to get near her just once as that something about her when she was twelve hasn’t quite been shaken from me and in a lot of ways, I’m glad of that as I am more than curious to explore what that is! But seeing Shooting Star grow from being a mere twelve year old kid to a teen has been a real treat for me as I have been curious about her the most since we met. I know she hasn’t quite remembered nor forgotten me, despite seeing me in her brother’s journal with a warning label slapped under my picture, but just flashes of memories with nothing to follow, not surprising.

When being banished here, I was given the option to exist in the real world with everyone else, in human form, but yet, I declined. Why live in the most horrid form ever when I can simply remain in this form and continue doing what I do best, making deals and monitoring how well those agreements are going over or don’t go over. After watching the most prized vision turn from a mere twelve year old to an alluring sixteen year old, I’d be a fool to not take that offer now. If I truly want to know what that special thing that is pulling me to Shooting Star is, I certainly can’t go in this form or I’d never find out.

I notice that the scene around me suddenly changes. It is no longer the mind numbing dismal darkness that I am use to being surrounded by, no this is different. Instead there is a bright light shining above me and below me, a brown walkway with a trail of green leading up to a house, a house I recognize to be the Mystery Shack. The dreamscape version doesn’t look anything like this one. This one is much brighter, much more……third dimensional. I guess the upper forces finally granted me what they have been trying to shove in my face since being banished to oblivion. Well I hope they’re happy because here I am.

Making my way up the brown dirt path that is lined with the greenest grass that anyone can ever see, I look down and notice that my shadow reveals that I am not in my triangular form, but yet am in the shape of a human. A tall lanky human! Wild shaggy hair, long legs, my hat sitting above my head, that thanksfully still being there, and behind me two pointed tails that is a part of my now human clothes, a yellow blazer with a brick design, a black bow tie, black slacks with very sharp creases, a white shirt, black gloves, and black shoes. Not too shabby, I can really get use to this.

Continuing my way up to the shack, I arrive at what I’m assuming is the front door and spot a sign on the door that states “Use other door for the gift shop” with an arrow pointing me in that direction. Ok, I’ll go to the gift shop.

Making my way around to the other side to the gift shop, I now spot my reflection in the window, being startled at what I see. Blonde shaggy hair, an eye patch covering my right eye with the left grey eye staring back at me, and stubble on my chin. Hmm, stumble, that’s new.

With a black gloved hand, I grab and turn the knob to the door with it opening with ease as a bell sounds. Walking in, I take a look around the shop and notice a lot of objects from Stan bobble heads to gift bags, at least I think that’s what they are called. From there, I turn my attention to the counter where a piece of paper is the first thing I notice next to a small rounded object, it not being my main focus at the moment, but more the paper.

Picking it up, I notice that several things are written down on it, like a bucket list of sorts. Blue eyes, blonde hair, soft touch, great kisser, cute smile, can make her laugh, what is this?! Shifting my vision to the top of the sheet, I now know that I am reading what Shooting Star has named this ‘Her perfect guy and qualities.’ Yep, that boy crazy part of her personality hasn't changed one bit.

Keeping my vision on her paper to read what else she has listed, I now hear her voice off in the distance, the pleasant tone sounding as if it is getting closer with each passing second. Folding up the paper, I quickly place it in my pocket so to keep it as a reference for later with the sixteen year old Shooting Star now entering the area, a vision that I have been looking forward to since seeing the girl grow from who she use to be to current. Just seeing her, I can feel my human heart begin to race with each minute I am drinking in of her image, her beautiful and alluring image. Wait, I got a human heart too?

As she entered the area, I noticed that she was looking for something while not taking notice of me right away. Maybe the list that I am now in possession of, but now her eyes land on me, a shocked expression crossing her features and to me, that’s making her even more beautiful than she already is.

“Uh, Hi. I didn’t hear anyone come in.”

“That happens.” I coolly reply to her with a smirk, her shocked expression changing to her usual sunny one as she begins approaching me slowly.

“So how can I help you?”

“Would you happen to have any Mystery Shack snow globes in stock?” I question, my eyes never leaving her beautiful brown vision.

A brace filled smile now covers her face as she runs over to me while directing me to the shelf by the door where tons of those knick knacks are, my having overlooked the obvious. Hey, I at least had an excuse right?

I can still remember the day that I was turned into that triangular monster and was doomed to live in the darkness of oblivion I am forced to call my home. That one journal, that one pesky journal that my curiosity begged me to look into while accompanying my best friend Will on the job, more like forced me, that’s what started it all. That’s how I am only able to live in the dreamscape, and that’s how I am able to only exist in that form. The day it happened, I call that my Dark Day. But you know what? My darkest day, my dismal existence, is now my Best Day and it’s all thanks to one shining Shooting Star who is giving me the price of the snow globes that I am really not paying attention to all that much despite how many she is throwing up in my vision.

This day in August that I finally accepted the offer to be in this form, this day that I came to see the one I’ve been watching since the age of twelve, and this day is the day that I will mark as the Best Day, replacing the darkest day in my life.

This is the best day that everything changed for Bill Cipher, dream demon extraordinaire!

“So how many can I ring you up for?”

“I’ll take them all.”

Review Please!
